For my first Mother’s Day, my husband rented a horse and carriage in Old Town Scottsdale. Romantic, right?! Our driver was charismatic, entertaining, and had the best sidekick ever – a little black Chihuahua in a cowboy hat! As we strolled the streets of Old Town Scottsdale, our driver shared some history with us. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but my mind was blown to learn that Scottsdale is known as a mecca for arts internationally! Over 30 years living in the Valley and I had no clue that Scottsdale serves as a prominent figure in the art world.
This wide array of artistic styles is right at your fingertips while you’re staying at the boutique hotel, Scottsdale Suites on Shea. Fifteen quick minutes in an Uber and you’re able to gawk at world-renowned art exhibited on Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale with over 100 galleries to peruse. If you chose to drive your own car, parking is free and plentiful!
For 40 years now, Scottsdale has been home to America’s Original ArtWalk. Every Thursday, from 7-9 these member galleries open their doors to you (and the rest of the general public, but you’re really the special one because you’re staying at Scottsdale Suites on Shea).
So, what sort of art strikes your fancy? Western traditional paintings? Hip and happening contemporary art? Russian Impressionism? Or sculptures that makes you go hmmm… ? Walk through these galleries at your own pace, stop in for a cocktail or apps at any of the top-rated restaurants scattered among these high-class galleries, and simply enjoy the people watching and beautiful weather.
If your Thursday night is already booked but you still want to dabble in the Scottsdale art scene, these museums will definitely satisfied your needs:
- Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) located in Old Town Scottsdale, this museum’s focus is on contemporary (obviously, it’s in the name) and modern art, architecture, and design.
- Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is the newest museum in the valley and you guessed it, it’s all about the Western spirit!
- Musical Instrument Museum is a 12 minute drive from Scottsdale Suites on Shea and is rated the Top Attraction in Phoenix on TripAdvisor and a Top 20 Museum in the US. The MIM hosts over 15,000 instruments from 200 countries.
- The Heard Museum is a little further from your boutique hotel with a 25 minute drive, but if you want to actively explore American Indian Art, this is the place to do it!
Scottsdale Gallery Association (SGA) hosts special events throughout the year with live music and themed events, so be sure to check out their event calendar when you book your stay at Scottsdale Suites on Shea. And if you really want to impress someone special, book a horse drawn carriage ride through Old Town Scottsdale, too!
